Long-distance runner Øystein Sylta distinguished himself as a world-class athlete when he won a military pentathlon in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, Øystein won the European pentathlon and was declared Best Military Athlete. He later specialized in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and won the Norwegian Championship in 2008. That same year, Øystein won the Nordic Championship in cross country.
